Introduction: The 2000s saw a respectable number of UFO sightings in
Southeast Queensland. The change to email reporting led to an almost 100% cessation of images accompanying reports, although the odd sketch was still submitted and digital photos slowly began to be received. The pattern of sightings throughout the 2000s experienced a sharp increase in 2002 when 85 sighting reports were received, and sightings remained at the top end of a slightly wonky bell-curve until a declining trend commenced in 2008. The types of UFOs seen spanned an entire spectrum of colour from orange to blue to green and everything in between and the shapes the UFOs were assuming provided just as much head-scratching variety for the members of UFORQ manning the phones and email report lines as they did for the people who were seeing them. A lot more space debris was reported than in previous decades, but in the main witnesses were reporting genuine ufological anomalies and not meteorites or crashing satellites as the mainstream would have us believe.
The pattern of sightings ran as follows: 2000 – 14 sighting reports; 2001 – 51 reports; 2002 – 85; 2003 – 64; 2004 – 81; 2005 – 73; 2006 – 82; 2007 – 72; 2008 – 48; 2009 – 46. Given the dearth of sketches from this decade, we’ve culled the more interesting descriptions from our archives to post here and hopefully these descriptions will be enough to paint the images of witness reports.
Gold Coast, Queensland. Tuesday January 18, 2000 10.00pm
Three witnesses observed two lights in the southern sky at about 45 degrees elevation moving west. The lights were below the clouds of that night and seen for about 2 minutes. The leading light faded as though entering the base of the cloud layer and seemed to change direction at that point. No sound was heard, and the lights did not resemble those displayed by aircraft. It was travelling from east to west and took approximately 2.5 to 3 minutes to travel from horizon to horizon. She was aware what satellites looked like but was sure this was not a satellite.

All of a sudden it moved in a jerky fashion about 4 palm widths at arm’s length, then with the same jerky movement returned to its original location. It moved over the nursing home and as daylight broke it took off at the speed of light. She went to work and was ridiculed but a couple of weeks later two other nurses reported seeing the same object.

The object was round at the front and elongated. After 2 to 3 minutes he heard a loud sound like a sonic boom. [Ed. – A preliminary interpretation of this sighting is that this object might have been a meteorite passing 20-40km above in the atmosphere.]

The duration of the sighting was about 10 minutes. The above report was published in the Hervey Bay Chronicle. The witness version of this incident is: “I looked up above the house and saw something the size of a light aircraft. It was a yellow/orange/red colour with flames around it and bright enough to make me squint. I thought it was the after burner of an F111. At the same time I noticed that there were no sounds, no insect noises, you could hear a pin drop. This lasted for 5 to 10 minutes. I ran to get the video camera and recorded as the object made a very fast 90 degree turn. It shot out 100 yards and then returned to its original course and eventually disappeared. When it disappeared I could hear the crickets again. I watched it for about 10 minutes. It was a still night and there was no smell of fuel. I live on acreage, and there are no city lights. Visitors there at the time did not want anything to do with it, and they left quickly. I was in the army and I have seen flares and mortars. The object moved in a straight line and should have come to ground. It passed behind clouds. The witnesses lived close to the Oakey military base and their radar was not operational at the time.
December 31, 2000. reported March 2012. location unknown
I have recollections of about 14 years worth of UFO sightings, which ended roughly five years ago. They were occurring that frequently, about two to three times a week, that I and my wife became quite used to them, even having the opportunity to point them out to BBQ guests every now and then. We never bothered making specific notes about times and dates and so on, because they were so frequent.
One of them, I’m guessing about ten or twelve years ago, was actually as creepy as it was spectacular, and provided about twenty minutes of entertainment for about ten of us at a New Years Party across the road from us. We’d been there about half an hour and a mate pointed roughly north north-west at two big orangey/red things and yelled to me, “hey, there’s ya UFOs”. Everyone there laughed, me included, because the direction we were looking was into the flight path for jets coming into Brisbane, so we initially jumped to the conclusion that they were in fact jets. Then it dawned on us that they weren’t moving. It was raining very heavily too, and there were no beams coming from the lights like you’d expect, and like we have observed from approaching jets in the past, even when it’s not raining.
We all watched these things for about twenty minutes, going through various theories about what they might be. The only movement we saw was from the one on the right which slowly moved down a small distance before stopping. The next morning I was going over the whole thing in my head, still perplexed and a little disturbed when it occurred to me that I couldn’t remember how the whole thing ended. I remembered we watched these things for about twenty minutes. I remembered we left the party at about 11.15pm. I hadn’t a lot to drink and neither had anyone else, but I just couldn’t remember how it ended. I asked my wife, who doesn’t drink at all. She got a funny look on her face and said that she couldn’t remember how it ended either. I thought that was a bit strange so I went back across the road and asked the mate who’d had the party. He couldn’t remember either. I ended up asking everyone who was there, and not one could remember how that ended. I still get a creepy feeling every time I think of that.
The next most spectacular occurrence I saw was one of these things which came from the east. It moved slowly west toward our place (I was out the back having a cigarette), and slowed almost to a stop above the old air field at the end of our street. I was looking up at it at about a 45 degree angle. It turned right and went the wrong way up the flight path that goes over our house. I had a ‘mag light’ with me and whilst the object was making its very slow turn, which was not an arc, but a right angle, I contemplated flashing it at the thing. I suddenly got the creepy feeling that whatever I was looking at was looking at me too, so I thought better of it.
Red Hill, Saturday December 30, 2000. 8.15pm
Four witnesses observed a round object with five lights “at it’s back” moving west at an altitude of 1000 feet. There was no cloud in the sky and the object was moving slowly without noise. It was observed for five minutes and continued in a steady straight line horizontally until lost behind trees. It seemed to be travelling at half the speed of a plane and it’s apparent size was a lot smaller than a full moon.
Near Ipswich, Queensland. 11 February, 2001 3am Two people were driving to a party in Ipswich when they became lost and were running low on fuel. As they searched for their way, they noticed a red light in the sky. Suddenly, they were forced to slam on the brakes when they spotted a large owl sitting directly in the middle of the road. After coming to a stop, they noticed six small green lights in the long grass at the side of the road. As they watched, something in the sky caught their attention—an object that resembled the Moon, but it was moving erratically, bouncing around the sky before heading straight toward them “like an arrow.” The object appeared to be made of dark metal, glowing with a bright orange hue. As it approached, they could make out the underside, which reminded them of the underside shell of a Moreton Bay Bug, a type of Australian crustacean. Once the object moved away, they continued driving to the Aratula petrol station. There, they asked the attendants if anyone else had seen the strange lights in the area, hoping to find some explanation for what they had witnessed.
April 7 2001, Taringa, Brisbane, 8.00pm
My housemate and I were walking back from Indooroopilly in Brisbane to our home in Broomfield Street about 8.00pm. He was very drunk as he had finished work earlier, but I was sober. We heard a hissing noise and both looked straight up. An object was about 35 metres above us, rectangular like a domino but divided into three squares. The long side was the front leading edge. I would say it was 5 metres breadth and 15 metres length (as it was made of 3 squares). On the back of it were two flames, but like a jet lighter flame, totally conical and clean, but still a flame, blueish and orange. Each of the squares had what looked like soft yellow downlights in the corners, which showed the underneath to maybe have a roughish detailed surface. It moved rather slowly, maybe 70-80 kilometres an hour. We both vocalised independently that it was a UFO. It moved at an even level, unwavering, and went over the left side of Mt Coot-tha and was gone. As it went overhead we had a good few seconds of looking at it up close. My friend remembers but was very drunk and doesn’t remember details unfortunately. It was over Taringa heading in the direction of Mt Coot-tha from the St Lucia/Indooroopilly direction. It was pretty much flying perpendicular with Broomfield Street.
Dalby, Queensland 25 October, 2001. A woman was out walking when she saw a bright orange ball coming down to the ground in a straight line at 80 degrees. It had a long tail and lit the sky up in an orange light. She observed it for 2 seconds. She rang the Oakey army base and was told the MPs there saw it too.
Wide Bay Military Training Area, Queensland. 2001/2002 (reported July 2023)
The witness was looking east and saw a UFO on Wide Bay Training Area about 2001/2002. He and a friend were on an Army exercise on gun picket and were watching satellites, shooting stars etc in a magnificent night sky. What they
initially thought was a white speck of space junk or a satellite tracking across the sky at about the same speed as the others suddenly accelerated vertically out of sight in about 1-2 seconds. “The acceleration was, say you look into the night sky, put your arm at full extension holding a one metre ruler. Then it accelerated that distance comparatively in 1-2 seconds, essentially leaving the vicinity of Earth and going somewhere very quickly.

Stanthorpe, QLD, 2002
A woman who lives on a farm was in bed when she heard a loud crashing on the roof. She initially thought it was a plane crashing, but then her bedroom was lit up through the curtains and she could smell sulphur. Her dog in the next room began scratching at her bedroom door to be let in. Looking outside everywhere she found no sign of anything. The next day she was at the local shop talking to a girl she knew who lived half a kilometre from her farm and the girl confirmed that her dog was upset too. A few days later after the crashing sound incident, the woman’s dog became unwell with coughing. The sulphur smell lingered, disappearing then reappearing in other rooms in her house. Her house has a cement floor and showed no sign of anything emerging from under it, yet the smell remained. Her property is reasonably flat but high up.
Gold Coast, 2002-2003
I lived on the Cold Coast and in 2002/2003 saw strange lights in the sky. I lived in Crestridge Crescent, Oxenford at that time and had a good view from the bedroom window. I could not sleep that night and enjoyed the view from my bed, till I saw those strange lights. I did not wake up my husband. What I saw were about four or six lights going up and down, but in the same area. It went on for a long time and it looked as if they were playing with each other. It could not have been helicopters because of the way they moved around. Because I never heard a thing about it, not in the newspaper, not on the news and not from other people, I thought I better not tell anyone, otherwise they might think I am crazy.
St Kilda, Melbourne. Sunday February 9, 2003 (weekend of the St Kilda Festival)
A man was walking towards his car parked in Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, when he looked up in the sky between two buildings and saw a black triangle moving slowly. He described it as having white lights in each corner with a red light in the centre. He ran to a nearby woman and said “do you see that?” but she seemed dazed and didn’t respond. The triangle then did a U-turn, paused, then passed behind a building and disappeared. He saw it for about 20 seconds so he “got a good look at the object” and describes it as being identical to what was reported being seen over Belgium during 1989/1990.
*The Belgian UFO wave resulted in no less than 2500 written reports of flying triangular objects submitted by a percentage of the estimated 13,000 witnesses.
These objects were being tracked on radar and fighter jets scrambled, and reports were even submitted by the Gendarmerie. Pilots of the jets reported the objects were moving so fast they could not possibly be man-made, being able to move from an elevation of over 15,000 feet to 500 feet in a matter of seconds. All these years later no concrete explanation has been forthcoming.
Gold Coast, Queensland. 2004
A young woman was attending Bond University and was driving home just after midnight on the road to Helensvale near the beer factory. She was alone on the road and noticed a very bright white silent light approaching her vehicle from behind.
It was approximately 100 metres above the ground, but as it got closer it descended to only 50 metres above her car. She became very frightened as it paced her car for about 10 minutes, following her car exactly into the many twists and turns on that road. When she caught sight of other vehicles ahead she accelerated to be nearer to them, and as she did the object departed. She was extremely frightened through the entire episode. She stated this was definitely not a plane or helicopter. This was the first time she had ever experienced anything like it.
Main Beach, Queensland. 2005
A man was laying on the beach looking at sky. Wearing polarised glasses he observed a white object about the size of a pin head which seemed to be hovering over Surfers Paradise. It started to move slowly east, going out to sea. As it did, two more white objects appeared from the east and made their way slowly to meet it. They fell into line with the first object, hovered for 30 to 45 seconds, then all slowly moved out to sea. He watched them for five minutes. The witness has seen many satellites before and said they were definitely not satellites, planes or helicopters.
When the same man was 17 years old in New Zealand he went rabbit shooting with a friend. It was 5.00am and they were sitting near their vehicle when they observed a light like a light bulb come down to ground and land. It was about five miles from their location. As daylight broke the young men decided to walk to where the light had landed, but when they got there they could find nothing.
Fraser Island, Queensland. 2007 8pm – 9pm.
A man and his wife were moored off Fraser Island four years ago. He was with his wife were accompanied by another couple in their boat. They were 200 to 300 yards (180 to 270 metres) off the beach and could see three small lights moving along the beach. Two of the lights seemed to be meeting up with the other one which was more stationary. When all the lights finally came together about 40 seconds later, the four witnesses observed a saucer-shaped object rise off the beach taking off into the sky at a 15 degree angle, then rising to pass over their boat about 50ft (15 metres) away and 30ft (9 metres) above them. The main witness described being able to see inside the object which was lit up a ‘lettuce-green colour,’ but could not see any occupants. Externally, the middle of the object was spinning and turned slowly, revolving once every four seconds. The top of the object ‘appeared like glass’ and the top ‘cabin’ tapered to the centre. The lower part of the object was metallic looking but did not reflect any light. Witnesses heard no sound during their observation which was for less than 30 seconds. They were amazed!
28 March, 2009. Dalby, Queensland, Australia Glancing out my lounge room window on Saturday 28th March 2009 about 8.30pm (an approximate) I saw a bright orange coloured light moving across the sky. It was low enough to tell there were three lights in a triangular shape that emanated a bright but unusual orange light. My partner also saw the light and we went outside to observe it for about five minutes. The light travelled north-east and rose higher so that it became a very small light and eventually went from view. It was the first time I have ever seen anything like this.
MISCELLANEOUS REPORTS RECEIVED IN 2000
The following was received via email in July 2000:
Good morning. I just had to write this down, so I know that I didn’t imagine it. Yesterday, I was taking a picnic lunch up to Binny who was working up at Wakes Lagoon – which is about 60km north of our house. Anyway, it was 11:10am and I was on the road near the airstrip, [Adavale] – which means I was heading west – when right in front of me came something down from the sky – it was falling really fast, and looked like metal disintegrating and was so bright that I had to close my eyes and stop the car. [of course I stopped the car first] Darcy saw it too and was very excited – at first I thought it was going to cross on the road ahead of me – like a whirly wind sometimes does – then I thought we would hear a big bang when it hit the ground, but I guess it burnt up before it impacted because it got to the tree line on the other side of the airstrip and … well… nothing – it vanished. I was tempted to drive over to where I saw it go down, but I was running late and I figured whatever it was would still be there when we got back. Then we got back very late last night, so I missed it in the dark. When I got to Wakes and discussed it with some others, we decided that it could have been a shooting star – because that is not unheard of, but it was so fast and the streak was so bright – it was, I’m sure like metal burning up and disintegrating. Has anybody mentioned a missing satellite lately? Who can I ask? Anyone got the number of the FBI Unexplained phenomenon’s? This is a job for Mulder & Scully! Really bizarre!
In a further message, the witness stated: The man who reported it to the ABC Longreach Radio lives about 200km north of us and if he said it went down 100-200metres from him, it must have been a very long way away for both of us, unless we saw two separate parts of the same broken up …thing… I’m surprised to hear that the report made it to the city.
[There were other similar reports of this sighting on ABC radio news Longreach with other witnesses some distance from each other, and all stating that the object was very close to them. Further, a Courier-Mail article explained the occurrences as a meteor shower. Alert readers will have noticed in our Sightings section a number of sightings around the 7th and 8th of July. Coincidence…? – PP]
Surfers Paradise, some years ago
A man reported that on a night some years ago, on the beach he saw red blue and green lights on a triangular shape about 100 feet above him which had the colour of a stealth fighter. There were other people on the beach and the object made no noise. He could not seem to take any kind of action and felt “mellow”. However he did note from his watch that the episode lasted 30 to 45 minutes.
Aspendale, southern Victoria 1979, 11.00pm [reported 2000]
A man now retired to the Gold Coast was living in the southernmost part of Victoria in 1979. One night at about 11 pm he and his wife saw a circular objects with lights around it about 150 yards away from their house. It was observed for about 10 minutes whereupon it flew away over the sea. The object seems to have come down to the ground in several places because there were found places near the sighting where vegetation ceased growing. The sighting had been reported to the Victorian UFO Society.
1974/75 [reported February 22 2000]
A man observed a UFO over the Illawarra power station. It was a long silver object with portholes. He was driving at the time whilst trying to keep an eye on it when it disappeared at lightning speed.
Cairns, [reported Thursday December 21 2000]
A message was left on the answering machine stating that when the witness was about 13 years old or less, he observed two round objects about one foot apart moving about in the sky together. The sighting was made in the early 1950s. (no phone number left to return call)
Bankstown NSW, late 1960s [reported 2000]
The witness remembers a sighting which he witnessed with 8 other children at Milperra. They were at a bar-b-que on semi-rural land and it was after midnight. The object was reported in the media and had left a huge mark on the Bankstown golf course about half a mile away. He did not see this mark [a circle of flattened grass] but saw a photo of it. The object changed size in an instant while being observed by him.
